Furniture Warranties (and the secret)...
When you are
talking to the salesman about your purchase
of church pews, be sure to ask about the
warranty. When they say, 25 years, 50
years, or lifetime, keep in mind this
important thing: Churches change over
time.
Every year,
approximately 5% of the people in a church
"turn over". That means that 5% die, move
away, quit, join another church, etc., and
there is usually "growth" of about 5%. Of
course, there are exceptions, and many
churches grow more quickly. But for most
churches these figures are true. That means
in 20 years, you essentially have a totally
new church! Pastors stay an average of 5
years, so in 20 years, you will probably
have had 4 different pastors. I wonder how
many church secretaries that is? Keep in
mind the warranty papers are tucked away in
some drawer, maybe in the building
chairman's home file cabinet. The only
problem is he left the church years before
you needed those papers!
 The other
secret you need to know about is the "small
print". In almost all pew warranties, the
following items are excluded from warranty
service: wear and tear, abuse, acts of God,
fire and flood, exposure to the elements,
failure to maintain proper humidity levels
in the church, and failure to maintain the
furniture properly. Well folks, that makes
your warranty papers worthless!
Think about
it - how many churches keep that air
conditioning running all the time (or heat
in the winter)? How many wax and polish the
furniture on a regular basis and keep
records? Exposure to the elements includes
extreme temperatures and normal humidity,
both of which can damage pews. The
warranties you hear about are intended to
impress you, and not to serve you later.
What to do
about it? Write your own warranty! Submit
it as part of the contract and see what
happens. If they want your business, you
will have no problems. Otherwise, you need
to run from the company that won't work with
you!
